Objectives

To build the human network and data collection platform needed to facilitate regional martial arts projects in Africa

To discuss the role of an African association of martial arts and how to organize it

 

Plans for 2020

(Date) September 2020

(Host country) Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe in Southern Africa (tentative)

(Participants) 50 individuals from 12 member states (governments, UNESCO, academia, martial arts groups and sports officials)

(Participating member states) Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Swaziland

(Organizer) Zimbabwe National Commission for UNESCO (tentative)

(Theme) Development and engagement of African youth and women through martial arts

(Description)

  - Congress for martial arts organizations, academia and groups in Africa

  - Sharing of policies and issues on youth and women in different African member states

  - Exchanges between experts to increase involvement of African youth and women in martial arts

  - African regions taking turns to host the congress (in order of East, West and Southern Africa), designation of focal points by region

(Timeline)

- Jan. - Feb. 2020 Kick-off meetings and preparatory visits to host country, MOU signed

with local stakeholders

- Mar. - Apr. 2020 Organizing committee launched and master plan developed

- May - Jun. 2020 Detailed plans laid out, participants selected and meeting agenda finalized 

- Jul. - Aug. 2020 Participants confirmed, final preparations

- Sep. 2020 3rd African Regional Martial Arts Congress

- Oct. 2020 Meeting results compiled and published in Korean and English

 

Expected Outcomes

A network of experts established and maintained to help facilitate future projects by forging a regional martial arts network in Southern Africa

Information to coordinate projects tailored to Southern Africa and a martial arts database for the region

Ways to increase African youth and women’s involvement in martial arts

Spread of non-violence and prevention of school violence in Africa through martial arts
