  1st African Regional Martial Arts Congress


Project Summary

  - Martial arts in Africa and youth engagement brought together the diverse groups of policy makers and experts to share ideas and experiences on the concerned subjects and established a platform for dialogues on the matter for the first time in the fields of martial arts in local-specific contexts. The Congress is organized by UNESCO ICM in collaboration with Kenya National Commission for UNESCO

  - Date : 23 to 24 October 2018

  - Venue : Ivory Conference Room, Hilton Nairobi Hotel, Kenya

  - Participants : Total 46 Participants

   1. Academia and Scholars (9 People)

   2. Governmental Staffs (6 People)

   3. Martial Arts Experts (13 People)

   4. UNESCO ICM (7 People)

   5. National Commission for UNESCO and Regional Office (5 People)

   6. Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM)

  - Participating countries: Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Mauritius, Djibouti, Mali, Ghana and the Republic of Korea

  - Main Contents

   1. Presentations on current status, challenge and opportunities in martial arts, in particular reference to youth development and engagement

   2. Focus group discussion to develop ideas for priority areas for collaborative action places and field trip

 

Key Outcomes

  - Establishments and reinforcement of netwroks between stakeholders, partner institutions in the subregion of East Africa in the fields of Martial arts

  - Enhanced visibility of martial arts for youth development and engagement and laid the groundwork for the development of an action plan for further collaboration in its promotion.

  - The Congress was jointly organized by UNESCO ICM and Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea, and the Chungcheongbuk-do as well as Chungju-si
