There is a saying that martial arts is a game without winners or losers. However these days as sparring gains more popularity I feel many people are forgetting about the spirit and tenets of Taekwondo. Especially when it comes to youth, focusing too much on sparring where players gain points by attacking the opponent, might lead to showing less respect to the ones who have lost. On the other hand, practicing Poomsae helps players build confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment while demonstrating the skills they have acquired by training alone.

After many consideration and long thoughts on how to create a conducive environment for children to practice Poomsae by themselves, I have developed a way of practicing Taekwondo using targeted tools. This training method has received Grand prize on the 15th Korea Taekwondo Dojang Management and Instruction Competition in 2011. By providing specific goals, this training method motivates the trainees and help them concentrate, which in turn leads to training voluntarily.

Target tools make tedious training become a fun game. Anyone, from the young to the elderly, can easily train using target tools. But in principle, the target tools training method is only recommended to those who have practiced Taekwondo for longer than a year and are ready to train alone.

▣ Training methods using Target Tools

- Teaching Taekwondo with water bags

- Teaching Taekwondo with domino

- Teaching Taekwondo with scented candles

- Correcting posture using colored tapes

- Teaching how to bend knees appropriately with hula hoops

- Using belts for higher sidekicks

- Poomsae practice using different colors

- Teaching how to improve muscular strength and speed using a Rainabow Stand, a multi training device for training kick, hit and blocking

- Teaching how to improve hip flexibility using Rolling Wall Stand

- Balance training using foam rollers

I have invented patented-training tools to make training more effective. The Domino Wall Stand, for instance, is a device that can be used by anyone practicing kicks. It is designed to gradually increase the level of kicks while preventing injury. The domino blocks can be adjusted into different heights, forms, and locations, enabling practitioners to train kicking more accurately and delicately.

-Registered patents for the teaching tools

The effectiveness of this training was recognized by many educational organizations, including Taekwondo Poomsae Teams at Seoul Information Technology High School and Baekseok University. The institutions have signed an industry-academia agreement and are currently on training with these methods and tools.

The main purpose of practicing Taekwondo is self protection. Looking good is important, however, an excessive amount of training which harms the body must be avoided. By utilizing the hidden principles of the target training tools, we can advance our skills in a systematic way.

I wish to create fun classes for the students learning Taekwondo enabling an environment where they are motivated to train and learn by themselves. This is why I continue teaching Taekwondo in my Dobok trying to make training and the sessions more exciting.

As an instructor at Korea Taekwondo Association, Choi has contributed to educating, distributing, and spreading appropriate teaching methods to the instructors in Korea since 2012.
