General Information |
Sayokan is martial arts style created in Turkey. The philosophy behind this system supports the natural way of moving and reacting to the situation without holding on to detailed and specific techniques that have to be memorized. It emphasizes strategy rather than technique. There are two training programmes in sayokan. The Alagan programme is to train for competitions whereas the Basagar programme is meant for self-defense (Sayokan World Federation, s.d.). |
History/Development |
Sayokan was created by Nihat Yiğit (1961-) in the 1990s. Skilled in different martial arts Yiğit looked for a system using techniques more freely. According to the official sayokan website he developed some of ashihara karate’s techniques further and added techniques inspired by traditional Turkish martial culture (Sayokan World Federation, s.d.). |
