Young people aged 15–24 account for approximately 16% of the global population, yet they face a range of complex challenges, including insufficient physical activity, declining mental health, social isolation, and rising youth unemployment. These issues have been further exacerbated in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, with significant changes such as a 41% decrease in physical activity, a 200% increase in youth mental health concerns, and an additional 4 million unemployed youth recorded as of 2020.
In response to these challenges, UNESCO has developed the Fit for Life Sport Leadership Programme. The programme aims to empower young people to become proactive leaders driving positive change within their communities by utilizing sport as a tool for development (Sport for Development). Youth participants (aged 18–35) engage in a structured pathway that includes masterclass training, implementation of community-based projects, 4–6 months of professional experience, and the organization of a youth-led global symposium, thereby strengthening their leadership and practical capacities.
