04 05 ICM 2022 Annual Report Foreword The report also details other programmes of ICM in 2022 including the Martial Arts Research Initiative for Experts, Online International Youth Martial Arts Camp, and World Martial Arts In-depth Research. The ICM?s many partner organizations and experts in Korea and abroad were extremely helpful in achieving the Centre?s 2022 goals. This is our opportunity to extend the ICM?s gratitude to all persons and groups involved. The Centre remains firmly committed to advancing development and social participation of global youth and women using martial arts education through ?empirically quantified physical education and martial arts policy research, youth and women?s capacity building, martial arts research and surveys, and network building worldwide.? Expressing our sincere appreciation for our global network of partner organizations and experts for their consistent support, we sincerely ask for your continued interest and kind advice for the Centre?s activities. Thank you very much. Since its founding in 2016, the UNESCO International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement under the auspices of UNESCO (ICM) has conducted programmes with the objectives of building competency and encouraging social engagement of youth and women, while solidifying culture of peace through martial arts training and values. The 2022 Annual Report covers the ICM?s activities and achievements on its sixth anniversary. Over the past three years, COVID-19 placed many restrictions on youth education and physical activity. Recognizing that global cooperation for the physical health and emotional stability of youth is more critical than ever, the ICM has aggressively worked to achieve its stated purposes and functions. Easing of COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 allowed the in-person holding of most ICM programmes and events previously done online. Physical contact is essential for martial arts, and in-person activities offer opportunities for multicultural exchange and communication. The 2022 International Martial Arts Academic Seminar, UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Education Prize, and African Martial Arts Congress were all held offline this year, with over 220 participants from 36 countries. In September 2022, the ICM Martial Arts Demonstration Team attended the International Martial Arts & Malay Silat Festival hosted by the Malaysian Pencak Silat Federation, networking with martial arts organizations and think tanks in Malaysia. The Martial Arts Open School has worked with Good Neighbors Malawi to develop plans for sustainable martial arts education in the African country. New programmes in 2022 included the Martial Arts Summer School for International Students, which spread the cultural value of martial arts and promoted their global exchange, and a Model UNESCO Conference that allowed youth from six countries to cultivate their international sensibilities and capacities. The report provides ICM?s key activities and achievements in 2022 KIM Kyujig UNESCO ICM Secretary General The Centre remains firmly committed to advancing development and social participation of global youth and women using martial arts education through ?empirically quantified physical education and martial arts policy research, youth and women?s capacity building, martial arts research and surveys, and network building worldwide.

First, youth programmes in martial arts in each country were reviewed based on the Youth Development through Martial Arts: An Evaluation Framework for Youth Activities, a joint study with UNESCO Bangkok in 2019, and discussion was held on standards for systematic and effective programmes. The reviews led to the development of the ?Martial Arts Instruction Plan for Youth Character-Building? for use in the field in the corresponding countries. Participants also shared their experiences and opinions on difficulties in teaching martial arts and directions for progress. The participants presented a developed instruction plan on November 15, 2022, to the International Martial Arts Academic Seminar. 5th Martial Arts Research Initiative for Experts (MARIE) This year?s seminar, under the theme ?Youth Development through Martial Arts,? was jointly hosted by the ICM and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Mara Technological University, UiTM) of Malaysia. This academic partnership was formed last year with UiTM through joint in-depth research into martial arts. The seminar was held alongside the awards ceremony for the UNESCO ICM Martial Arts Education Prize, inviting the 2022 winners as well as those from 2021 whose ceremony was online due to COVID-19.
